This guide will walk you through a CJ5 Jeep steering knuckle installation. It’s a fairly easy process but if this is your first time doing it, you’re going to need to familiarize yourself with all of the parts and steps beforehand.
To begin, you're going to take both of the king pin bearing cups and place them flush inside of the axle housings. When the cups are in place, you're going to grab both the oil seal felt padding and the rubber seal. Pull each of these parts over the axle housing. After putting the oil seal felt padding and rubber seal in place, begin greasing up both of the king pin bearing cones.
When they’re ready, place the king pin bearing cones inside of the bearing cups. You’re not done with that grease just yet—once the king bearing cones are greasy and in place, you can grease up the entire axle housing.
For the next step, you’re going to need your knuckle support. Take the support and securely place it over the axle housing. In order to truly secure it, you’re going to need the help of the king pin bearing cap. This bearing cap is going into the top of your knuckle support—but before you do that, put a couple of shims on the bearing cap. Once you combine the shims and the bearing cap, you can place them into the top of the knuckle support.
You should have two king pin bearing caps, so once you put the first one in the top of the knuckle support, insert the second one into the bottom. After this, you’ll need to take some lock washers and bolt them into both of the bearing caps. Matching the lock washers with the right torques will keep them nice and secure in the Jeep.
Now, you’re going to reach behind the knuckle support to the oil seal felt padding and rubber seal you put into place earlier. Take the rubber oil seal and pull it towards the back of the knuckle support. Use your hand to firmly press the rubber oil seal in a way that keeps it nice and snug in the back of the knuckle support, as well as around the axle housing. After the rubber oil seal is in place, do the same thing with the rubber seal so it presses up against the back of the oil seal felt padding.
We’re close to the finish line but not quite there. Next, you’re going to take a similar step and place both the upper and lower steel retaining plates against the back of the rubber seal. When they’re in place, bolt the retaining plates to the knuckle support and seals. Now, you’ve officially reached the finish line of this CJ5 Jeep steering knuckle installation. Once you have the right quarter ton Jeep parts by your side, you’ll be ready to go.
